The 2011 Georgia State Steel Challenge

During a rainy, muddy weekend in February, the Georgia State Steel Challenge was held at the Griffin Gun club with many of the nation’s elite shooters competing for the state titles. Held Febuary 4-5, 2011 the eight stage steel challenge opened on Friday to cold, rainy conditions. Over 100 shooters competed in the rain on Friday and in the mud on Saturday for a shot at victory in one of the six divisions. As one of the early matches of the season it allows shooters to prepare for the Steel Nationals.

The Georgia State Steel Master was Dave Sevigny who took home top honors in the .22 Open Rimfire division as well as the Limited Division proving once again his versatility in the shooting sports. Jessie Abbate secured the Women’s Steel Master title with top performances in all three categories she entered. She was the top female in .22 Open, Limited and Open Center fire categories. Professional Shooter KC Eusebio dominated the Open Center fire division staying steady on his feet in the mud and scoring a strong 83.68 aggregate. Jason Koon took the first place prize home in the Production division with Randi Rogers winning top female in the Production division.

Junior shooter Tierani Hendrix debuted not only a new sponsor in Smith & Wesson but a new gun, the Smith & Wesson M&P. She was excited to shoot with her new gear and gun and manage to have fun and represent women shooters in both the Limited and Production divisions. With the season just getting under way expect big things from this Junior Lady.

Randi Rogers is off to the Florida Open in two weeks and happy the season has begun. “I was happy with my performance this early in the season and especially with these conditions,” stated a muddy Randi at the end of a long day two. “I enjoy Steel Challenge. The stages are not only challenging but they are fun as well.” When asked about her favorite stage, “I like Roundabout, but really I like them all don’t have one that is my least favorite.”

Jessie Abbate, professional shooter and co-host of Friends of the NRA, was beaming at the end of day two when she scored one of her best runs ever on Speed Option. “My favorite stage is my best of the day and my least favorite is the one that gave me the most trouble that day. I like Smoke and Hope and Speed Option, but really I love any stage I shoot clean,” she said when asked about the Steel Challenge. “I enjoy shooting steel and this is great preparation for the season ahead.”

With the announcements recently of the World Shoot and the Florida Open and Steel Nationals just ahead, it will be a busy season. Look for close finishes and records that will be broken in the 2011 season.

The Georgia State Steel match was a great success despite the rain and extremely muddy conditions. Even local shooters who braved the weather had a great time at the Griffin Gun Club. Glen and Marcella run great matches with the help of all the volunteers and make this state match one of the best in the country.

The match will be held on Saturday October 29th, 2011 at South River Gun Club. You know SRGC is Carducci Tactical’s home gun range here in Georgia and is proud to be hosting the Georgia State Championship.

From the GADPA website we found more information about the competition. Looks like this year’s IDPA championship will impress you with challenging stages. You might want to start dry fire exercises now and spend a day or two at the range in preparation.

This year’s match will be a one day event and will consist of a 13 stage course of fire. Stages will include: pneumatic and electronic movers, a shoot house and a side match on the plate rack. The round count will be approximately 200 rounds. This match will have a shotgun start (no squads) so you may shoot with whoever you wish.

There will be a registration tent next to the scoring trailer on the day of the match. Shooters may pick up their badges and shooter package there. Registration will begin at 7:00 AM on the day of the match. The fist shot will be fired at 8:00 AM so please arrive early.

Awards will be given per the latest edition of the IDPA rule book. For each division, trophies will be awarded to the following classes: marksman, sharpshooter, expert and master. We will also recognize the following sub-divisions: senior, high lady, high junior and high law enforcement. Trophies will be awarded to the DC and the first 3 places. Certificates will be awarded to those placing 4th or higher.

Our match sponsors have generously donated a number of prizes that will be given away at random. Glock has donated guns for our prize table. One drawing will be open to all shooters and the other drawing will be open to the Safety Officer and match staff.

We have purchased a separate gun that will be raffled during the awards ceremony. Tickets can be purchased at the side match table. You must be present to win. With each ticket purchased, you get a free run on the plate rack.

Bring plenty of extra ammo if you want to challenge your friends on the Bianchi plate rack. This is just for fun and is not an official stage. The cost to shoot the plates is $1.00 per string. Separate trophies will be awarded for this event.

Good look at the event and we will see you on the range!
