Do ballistic helmets stop gunshot impact?
It’s not news that the world has moved from fighting wars with arrows and clubs to sophisticated weapon combat. Asides from a nuclear weapon, guns, and rifles are the most popular combat weapons in this age. These weapons are known to cause direct injury as well as indirect harm to their target. To prevent this, soldiers wear all kinds of protective gear.
More often than not, any serious injury in combat to the head may spell death. So, there is a need for special protection for this upper part of the body. That’s where tactical helmets come in. However, it’s vital to know if these combat helmets can prevent gunshot impact.
Notably, helmets come in different types and offer varying degrees of protection. The majority of protective helmets can stop the smallest types of bullets from guns. However, a bigger bullet or a small bullet with greater force may penetrate a tactical helmet. Modern tactical helmets made from quality Kevlar materials may stop live rounds from some types of guns and rifles.
In essence, tactical helmets may only stop gunshot impact that it is equipped to prevent. But generally, most helmets may not save your head from high caliber bullets and automated rifles. Asides from bullets and gunshot impact, ballistic helmets exist for other reasons.
These tactical helmets save combatants from shrapnel. Blunt force trauma is also common in combats. Wearing a tactical helmet can prevent head trauma or injury that soldiers face when they fall or contact indirect impact.
It’s best to pit the protective capacity of a tactical helmet against the caliber or force of a bullet and rifle to know if the helmet can stop the bullet impact. Even if it can’t, it’s still always advisable to wear a ballistic helmet as leaving your head vulnerable is not a safe option. At least, the helmet will save you from unnecessary injuries and shrapnel.
