What Will Level IIIA Armor Protect?

When choosing a ballistic armor, it is best to know what type of ballistic protection it offers. Even though the Level IIIA armor doesn’t offer the highest level of protection on the market, it does keep you safer than facing a bullet round barefaced. The armor of Level IIIA is designed to stop Magnum rounds fired from handguns and all-round rifle ammunition. However, there may be multiple-hit cases where the armor can become weak and the rounds begin to penetrate. With a ballistic shield, the Level IIIA body armor can offer better protection to combat officers.

There is no single body armor that would make you indestructible. This is why law enforcement agents make use of ballistic shields for further protection. But the Level III armor does offer more protection than the Level IIIA armor. For one, the Level III armor is made to withstand rifle caliber rounds. A conditioned insert will always be used for testing Level III plates. The armor designed for Level III testing is designed to handle 147g FMJ 7.62mm (M80 military) bullets firing at 2,780fps and weighing 147 grains. According to the National Institute of Justice (NIJ), some of the most common ammunition used in AK-47s or sniper rifles, such as the 7.62mm Flat Nose (FN) rifle, can destroy the Level IIIA body armor.

You should consider the level of protection you require on the field when making the choice for your preferred ballistic armor. Many available armors are designed to protect wearers from select kinds of ballistic threats. If you know that you’re unlikely to be exposed to a certain kind of threat, then you might not need to put on heavier armor than required. Heavy armor can slow you down on the combat field. The Level IIIA armor offers moderate protection for most common ballistic threats.
