Level III+ Armor Explained
When it comes to body armor, there are a variety of ratings in place. It’s important to understand the different types of ratings and what they mean so that you can make an informed decision when purchasing personal protection equipment (PPE). In this blog post, we will discuss Level III+ armor and its ballistic resistance rating.
Ballistic Resistance Ratings for Level III+ Armor
Level III+ Armor is one of the highest-rated armor available on the market today. This type of body armor offers excellent protection against high-velocity rifle ammunition and other large-caliber weapons. Level III+ armor is rated to stop 7.62x51mm M80 NATO Ball (.308 Winchester) at a velocity of 2,780 feet per second (fps) or lower, as well as 6 rounds of 5.56x45mm M193 FMJ at a velocity of 3,100 fps or lower.
Level III+ armor is also able to protect against multiple hits from all types of handguns including 9mm FMJ RN projectiles at speeds up to 1,400 fps and .44 Magnum SJHP projectiles at speeds up to 1,400 fps. It should be noted that Level III+ armor is not designed to protect against submachine gun fire, buckshot, or specialty ammunition such as AP projectiles or explosive-tipped rounds.
It’s important to note that level III+armor does not offer any more protection than level III armor; instead, it just offers better performance against certain calibers and muzzle velocities than level IIIA alone can provide without sacrificing comfort or mobility. The added benefit of Level III+ armor is that it is capable of stopping higher velocity rounds while still being comfortable enough for the user to wear all day long if necessary.
Testing Procedures for Body Armor
All body armor must undergo rigorous testing to meet NIJ standards and receive their ratings. Each piece of body armor is tested by shooting a minimum number of rounds at specific velocities and angles at the piece in question to ensure that it will perform as expected when put into use by an individual operator. Once these tests have been performed successfully the body armor will receive its rating from the National Institute Of Justice (NIJ). Every three years the NIJ reevaluates its standards and updates them accordingly for body armor to remain compliant with the requirements for each rating level offered by them. All level 3+ armor must pass this test before being certified by the NIJ and permitted for sale on the market today.
For those looking for high-quality body armor and tactical equipment, be sure to check out RTS Tactical. The level III+ hard armor plates from RTS Tactical have been tested beyond the velocities guided by the NIJ Standards.
When shopping for personal protection equipment (PPE), it’s important to understand what type of ballistic resistance rating each piece has to make an informed decision about which one best suits your needs. Level III+armor provides excellent protection against high-velocity rifle ammunition and other large caliber weapons while still allowing operators comfort and mobility throughout their mission or tasking at hand – making it ideal for many military personnel, law enforcement officers, security professionals, etc. With its ballistic resistance rating being independently tested every three years by the NIJ you know you can trust your life with this type of PPE when necessary.
